Pelican 1600 vs 1650 vs 1750: Choosing the Right Large Pelican Case

Three large black protective hard cases: a flat hand-carry case, a rolling case with pull handle and a long case

Choose the Pelican 1600 for a large, flat case you carry by hand; the Pelican 1650 for the biggest kit in a wheeled case one person can roll; and the Pelican 1750 for long items such as rifles, tripods and survey poles. All three are Protector cases with a watertight seal, a pressure purge valve and double-throw latches. The difference is shape and mobility.

Pelican 1600: the large hand-carry case

The 1600 is wide and relatively shallow, with handles on two sides so two people can lift a heavy load. It is popular for camera and lighting kits, field instruments and medical gear, and a 1600 EMS version is also available.

Pelican 1650: the largest rolling Protector in this group

The 1650 adds polyurethane wheels and an extendable handle to a deeper, longer interior. It is the pick when one person has to move a big kit through airports, job sites or venues.

Pelican 1750: the long case

The 1750 is built for long items. Hunters and shooters use it for scoped rifles, and production and survey crews use it for tripods, stands and poles. If you are flying with firearms, read our TSA firearm travel guide and hard gun case buying guide.

How to Decide Between Them

Measure the longest item

Anything over about 28 inches long points to the 1750.

Weigh the full kit

If the loaded case is heavy and one person moves it, choose the wheeled 1650.

Think about storage

The 1600 is shallow and stacks well on shelves and in vehicles.

Plan the foam

Custom-cut foam outlasts pick-and-pluck for gear that travels often.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Pelican 1600 have wheels?

No. The 1600 is a hand-carry case with handles. Choose the 1650 for a wheeled case with a pull handle.

Is the Pelican 1650 airline checkable?

It can be checked, but it is a large case. Loaded weight and size may trigger oversize or overweight fees, so check your airline’s limits.

Will a scoped rifle fit in a Pelican 1750?

The 1750 has roughly 50 inches of interior length, which fits most scoped rifles. Measure your rifle with the scope mounted first.

Can I replace the foam in these cases?

Yes. Replacement foam sets and pick-and-pluck inserts are available, and AllCases can cut custom foam to your gear.
