Rack case size comes down to two numbers: height in rack units (U) and usable depth. One rack unit is 1.75 inches tall, and standard rack gear is 19 inches wide, so a 4U rack case holds 7 inches of equipment, a 6U holds 10.5 inches and an 8U holds 14 inches. Pick the height from your gear stack, then pick the depth from your deepest device plus cable room.
How Rack Case Sizes Work
4U = 7″
Wireless receivers, a mixer plus a power conditioner, or a small network kit.
6U = 10.5″
The most flexible size: amps, processors and a drawer, or a compact server stack.
8U and up = 14″+
Full amp racks, broadcast kits and deployable IT systems with room to grow.
Step 1: Count your rack units
Add up the U height of every device, then add blank or vent panels for heat and at least 1U of spare space. Running out of room on a rack case means buying a second case, so most buyers size up one step.
Step 2: Measure the depth
Rack depth is measured from the front rail to the rear rail. Take your deepest device, then add 2 to 4 inches for connectors and cable bends at the back. Audio gear often fits 13″ to 20″ racks; servers and network equipment usually need 24″ to 30″.
Step 3: Shock-mounted or hard-mounted?
Hard-mounted racks bolt the rails directly to the shell and work for rugged gear that travels by car. Shock-mounted racks float the rails on isolators, which protects hard drives, servers and sensitive electronics from drops and truck vibration. Choosing the Right Rack Case Material
| Case type | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Rotomolded (SKB, Pelican-Hardigg) | Touring audio, military and IT that ships often | Heavier than injection-molded |
| Injection-molded fly racks | Small racks that fly as baggage | Limited depth options |
| Composite and aluminum | Defense, aerospace and deployable systems | Higher cost |
| ATA road case racks | Production companies that truck-pack | Not waterproof |

Frequently Asked Questions
How tall is 1U in a rack case?
One rack unit (1U) is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm). A 4U case holds 7 inches of gear, 6U holds 10.5 inches and 8U holds 14 inches.
How do I measure rack case depth?
Measure your deepest device from its front panel to the back of its connectors, then add 2 to 4 inches for cables. Match that to the case’s rail-to-rail depth.
What size rack case do I need for a server?
Most servers need 24″ to 30″ of depth and a shock-mounted rack. Count the server’s U height and add space for a switch, UPS or KVM.
Do I need a shock-mounted rack case?
Choose shock-mounted for servers, hard drives and sensitive electronics, or any rack that ships by freight. Hard-mounted works for rugged gear.
Not sure which rack size fits?
